AARP willing to consider cuts to Social Security – tell your elected officials they don’t speak for you!

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that AARP is willing to consider benefit cuts to Social Security. Social Security Works – Washington and our allies, including the Alliance for Retired Americans, are completely opposed to this position.

Ed Coyle, the Executive Director of the Alliance for Retired Americans responded, “The story in the Wall Street Journal – which states that AARP supports cutting Social Security benefits – makes it apparent to me that AARP is not representing their members on this issue. AARP does not speak for all seniors.  There is no ambiguity on where the Alliance for Retired Americans stands on Social Security – never has been, never will be. We are against Social Security benefit cuts. The current economic recession is all the proof we need to know that Social Security frequently is the only safety net that keeps millions of seniors in their homes with food on their tables.”

This position by AARP could give political cover to those members of Congress who are wavering on this issue and may choose to support draconian cuts.

***Please call and email your Member of Congress and your Senators to tell them NO CUTS!!! ***

My name is _________ and I am a constituent.  I am appalled that AARP is open to cutting Social Security benefits.  AARP does not speak for me. I urge you to stand strong against any cuts or changes to Social Security – period. There are many alternatives to strengthen Social Security besides cutting benefits. Raising the payroll cap, for instance.  Hands-Off Social Security!

Thank you for your participation!

Support the Reid-Sanders Social Security Protection Amendment

We need you to call your Senators and demand that they vote for the Reid-Sanders Social Security Protection Amendment.

Majority Leader Harry Reid (NV) and Senator Bernie Sanders (VT) are leading the fight in the Senate to protect Social Security from drastic cuts. The vote will be this week.

Their amendment says:

Social Security benefits for current and future beneficiaries should not be cut and Social Security should not be privatized as part of any legislation to reduce the Federal deficit.

Call your Senators RIGHT NOW toll-free at 1-866-251-4044. You’ll be given a choice of which of your state’s two senators to be connected with. Call BOTH if you have the time. It only takes a minute each. Tell the person who answers the phone:

I am a voter/constituent living in [your state]. I am calling to tell the Senator:

  • I oppose any cuts to Social Security and
  • I strongly urge them to vote YES on the Reid-Sanders Social Security Protection Amendment.

Please take the time for this very important effort today. This is for all of us who depend on Social Security. Call Today: 1-866-251-4044.

Washington callers contribute to national call-in day success

On November 30th, Social Security Works Washington called on its member organizations to join the National Call Congress Day. When the Congressional switchboard went down because it was overwhelmed with too many calls, we knew your efforts had been successful. Here are the numbers:

  • Washington callers placed 1,218 calls — 5th best out of all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
  • Patty Murray’s office received 633 calls, while Maria Cantwell’s staff reported 583.
  • All told, our National Call Congress Days generated more than 30,000 calls from across the country and sent a strong message, “Hands off our Social Security!”

In our battle to defend and strengthen Social Security, your voice is critical to our success. Thank you for your continued support!
